When it
comes to top-of-the-line golf courses, Los Cabos leads the pack. Golf is
such a draw here that many visitors come for the golf alone—simply
considering the azure ocean, golden sands, and mountainous desert terrain
as an added extra.
For
starters, there’s the 18-hole golf course—stretched along the Sea of
Cortez for 1.5 miles—at the Cabo del Sol
resort. Designed by none other
than Jack Nicklaus, this course has appeared many times on Golf Magazine’s
yearly list of “Top 100 Courses in the World.”
The
hacienda-style hideaway One&Only Palmilla has always been a favorite with
celebrity golfers, starting back in the days when John Wayne, Desi Arnaz,
and Bing Crosby would hit the links. It was here that Jack Nicklaus
designed his first signature Latin American course, the Palmilla Golf
Club, a tough, 27-hole course.
Or how
about the Robert Trent Jones-designed 36-hole course at the
Cabo Real Golf
Club? Or the local favorite, the scenic
Eldorado Golf Club, with its
ocean-view holes designed by Nicklaus (not to mention the oceanfront
driving range)? Other top area courses area include the golf club at
Sheraton Hacienda
del Mar Resort, the
Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos, the
Querencia,
the Cabo San Lucas Country Club, and the San José Golf Course.

Acapulco, a long-time favorite destination, combines quality playing
grounds with extraordinary nightlife. The 18-hole championship course at
the Acapulco
Princess, designed by Ted Robinson, features water hazards on 12 holes
and narrow fairways lined with coconut palms.
Originally
designed by Percy Clifford and then remodeled in 1982 by
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the 18-hole course at the
Pierre Marques Hotel is
beautiful and challenging. The spectacular, 18-hole par 72 course at the
Mayan Palace is characterized by lush landscaping, rustling palms, and
lovely lakes. Other top Acapulco courses: the Tres Vidas Golf Course and
the Diamante Country Club. A public course, the Club de Golf, a public
course, is located across from the Acapulco Malibu Hotel.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen,
and Cozumel—all located in the Mexican Caribbean—are home not just to
renowned-for-their-beauty beaches and spectacular Mayan ruins,
but also for sensational golf courses.

Perhaps
the best known is 18-hole
Cancun Golf Club
at Pok-Ta-Pok, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Poised between a
beautiful lagoon and the turquoise Caribbean Sea, the course incorporates
dramatic scenery and Mayan ruins into a par 72 course that offers
something for golfers with all skill levels.

The lush 18-hole Hilton Cancun Golf Club is set amidst the 6th century
Mayan ruins of El Rey and the beautiful Nichupte Lagoon. ~ Nearby is the
new and impressive Moon Spa & Golf Club, with its Jack Nicklaus signature
course. Part of the pleasure from playing at these and other courses is
the backdrop of sea, sky, colorful birds, darting iguanas, and other
exotic wildlife.
The
Caesar Park Beach & Golf Resort offers
reduced green fees for hotel guests, while the
Hotel Melia Cancun´s 9-hole
executive course provides breathtaking ocean views.
About an
hour south of Cancun in Playa Del Carmen are two outstanding courses.
El Camaleón (home to the PGA Tour in Mexico) borders the
beautiful Fairmont Mayakoba (photo at top). Winding through both a forest
canopy and a tropical landscape, it offers unique hazards such as cenotes. ~
The 18-hole
championship
Playacar Golf Course, designed by Robert Von Hagge, is surrounded by a
diversity of lakes and lush grounds; many consider it to be the region's
most challenging course.
A trip to the island of Cozumel offers a spectacular
18-hole Nicklaus-designed
course carved into the lush mangroves and forest: the
Cozumel Country
Club.

The El Cid Resort offers a par 72, 18-hole course, driving range, and
putting green; an additional 9-hole course, designed by Lee Trevino, is
located at nearby Marina El Cid—providing a 27-hole layout. Both courses
are reserved for resort members and hotel guests.

The
18-hole Estrella del Mar course on Stone Island was designed by Robert
Trent Jones. Stretched along the Pacific Ocean and nestled into a handsome
resort complex, it offers a wonderful tropical ambience. This course is
open to the public.
