The Glorious Greek Islands

Island-hopping in Greece is fun, not least because each island has a distinct look and personality. Island beaches often stretch for miles, incorporating steep cliffs, golden and sometimes black sands, quiet coves, deep bays, caves… Many islands possess the exquisite Aegean architecture: simple white buildings, blue roofs, narrow cobbled streets. On most, life is slow and peaceful; you'll spend time touring ruins, walking on the beach, or just sitting in cafés sipping small cups of thick black coffee and listening to bouzouki music. For a headlong leap into the fast life, try Mikonos. If you're after breathtaking views and mythology, visit Santorini, or Rhodes, or Ios, or, well, almost any of the others. If you don't want to stray far from the mainland, a daytrip to Evia, where you can see many ancient ruins, may be just the thing.

The largest island of all, Crete, has something for everybody: a big town with lots of hotels and restaurants, completely isolated and deserted beaches, and the astounding ruins at Knossos (capital of the Minoan empire 3500 years ago).

Among the World Heritage Sites in the Greek Islands are the entire island of Delos, the Medieval City of Rhodes, various parts of the Island of Patmos, Pythagoreion and Heraion of Samos, and the Old Town on Corfu. More information about these sites here.

More than 6,000 islands and islets belong to Greece, with most divided into island groups.
